Dean Vickerman to Leave Melbourne United After Nine Seasons as Head Coach

Melbourne United announced on Tuesday that Head Coach Dean Vickerman will depart the club at the end of his current contract. Vickerman stated his intention to explore coaching opportunities overseas, specifically mentioning Japan or China.

Coaching Record and Achievements

During his nine-season tenure, beginning in the 2017-18 season, Vickerman's record with Melbourne United includes:

  • 199 wins as head coach of Melbourne United, a club record.
  • Two NBL Championships (2018 and 2021).
  • Three NBL Coach of the Year awards.
  • A career total of 249 coaching victories, the seventh-most in NBL history.
  • The third-most Finals wins in NBL history, with 31.
  • The second-best winning percentage among coaches with more than 250 games (62.6%).

Player and Staff Development

Vickerman was credited with overseeing the development of players who later played in the NBA, including Jock Landale, Jack White, Ariel Hukporti, and Luke Travers.

In addition, multiple members of his coaching staff went on to become head coaches: Jacob Chance, Paul Henare, Mike Kelly, Simon Mitchell, Ross McMains, Justin Schueller, and Darryl McDonald.
