Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer commented on the recent U.S. operation in Venezuela and domestic policy matters.
U.S. Operation in Venezuela
Senator Schumer stated that the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces was unlawful. He cited the absence of congressional authorization for the action, which involved U.S. forces operating inside Venezuela and bombing both civilian and military sites.
Following President Donald Trump's statement that the United States would 'run' Venezuela until a transition, Schumer noted that the current leadership status in Venezuela was uncertain. He expressed skepticism regarding the feasibility and timeline of U.S. oil companies repairing Venezuela's oil infrastructure, a prospect mentioned by President Trump.
Schumer also criticized the U.S. intervention, indicating that it contradicted President Trump's campaign commitment to avoid "endless wars" and suggesting it could lead to prolonged conflict.
The U.S. operation involved a military extraction team, supported by over 150 military aircraft, entering Caracas. The team apprehended President Maduro and his wife from their compound and transported them to the USS Iwo Jima warship. They were subsequently brought to New York City, where Maduro is scheduled to face charges of narcoterrorism and drug trafficking.
