Man Arrested After Spray-Painting During Live Press Conference
A 30-year-old man was arrested after spray-painting a wall behind Queensland Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg during a live press conference at South Brisbane Station on Wednesday.
The incident occurred as Mickelberg announced reduced rail services due to ongoing wage negotiations with transport unions.
The man appeared to be writing the word 'QRUPT' and was heard repeating it as railway squad officers removed him from the area.
Police charged the 30-year-old Herston man with wilful damage by graffiti, commit public nuisance, and possess graffiti instrument. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 13.
Background: Service Disruptions and Stalled Negotiations
Almost 300 Queensland Rail services have been affected as enterprise bargaining negotiations with unions, including the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU), have stalled.
Mickelberg stated that maintenance has not been performed as a consequence of union industrial action over several weeks, leading to insufficient rolling stock to operate all services.
The RTBU has previously characterized its rolling strike action as "measured and deliberate."
The Fair Work Commission has called an emergency meeting for Thursday to address the deadlock.
