A Chery car dealership in Port Melbourne was firebombed in the early hours of May 6, 2026, becoming the latest incident in a series of 34 targeted crimes against Melbourne businesses.

Two men entered the showroom on Plummer Street at approximately 4:40 AM. They set a vehicle inside the dealership on fire before fleeing the scene. Firefighters arrived at 4:50 AM and found the showroom filled with smoke.

Approximately 30 firefighters, including an aerial unit, contained the blaze by 5:23 AM. Damage was primarily smoke-related. No injuries were reported.

Investigation Status

The Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit is investigating the fire, which is considered suspicious. Police are assessing a possible connection to the broader series of attacks.

The dealership had recently opened and is owned by businessman James Susler. Manager Victor Sargin reported that no threats were made prior to the incident.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush held a press conference addressing the series of firebombings, kidnappings, and shootings targeting the hospitality and adult entertainment sectors in Melbourne. According to police, the number of such crimes has reached 34.
