Russian and Ukrainian Strikes Kill Dozens Amid Ceasefire Proposals

A Ukrainian drone attack on Dzhankoi in Russian-occupied Crimea killed five civilians, according to Sergey Aksyonov, the region's Moscow-installed head.

Casualties from Drone and Bomb Attacks

In Zaporizhzhia, an attack by aerial bombs and drones killed at least 12 people, said regional governor Ivan Fedorov. In Kramatorsk, three aerial bombs killed six people, according to prosecutors in Donetsk Region. In Dnipro, a Russian attack killed four, and an overnight strike on gas production facilities in Poltava region killed five, including one in Kharkiv region.

Overall, Russian attacks across eastern Ukraine on Tuesday killed at least 27 people, one of the highest daily tolls this year.

Ceasefire Proposals

Russia announced a ceasefire for May 8-9 to coincide with commemorations of the Soviet Union's victory in World War II and a military parade in Moscow. Ukraine responded with a proposal for an open-ended ceasefire starting at midnight on Wednesday (21:00 GMT) and urged Russia to reciprocate.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Russia showed no signs of preparing to end hostilities and intensified attacks hours before the proposal deadline.

Venice Biennale

The Venice Biennale began previewing its 61st edition after its jury resigned over the participation of Israel and Russia. The Russian pavilion is open only during previews through Friday and will not be open to the public for the six-month run starting Saturday. It organized performances and had an open bar. Curators were not available for interviews.

Russia's participation cost the Biennale 2 million euros ($2.3 million) in EU funding over three years. The Biennale defended the decision, stating that any country with relations with Italy can open a pavilion.

Ukrainian artist Zhanna Kadryova created "The Origami Deer" to replace a Soviet fighter jet statue in Pokrovsk. Co-curator Ksenia Malykh opposed the Biennale's decision, saying neutrality is not possible when people die due to Russians.

US-Russia Contact and Arms Sale

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke by telephone with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at Lavrov's request. They discussed US-Russia relations, the Russia-Ukraine war, and Iran.

The US State Department approved the potential sale of Joint Direct Attack Munitions - Extended Range and related equipment to Ukraine for $373.6 million. The principal contractor is Boeing Company.
