Mike Wells Resigns as Adelaide 36ers Head Coach

Wells stepped down on May 6, 2026, to prioritize his family, just one month after the 36ers lost the NBL Championship Series to the Sydney Kings.

Tenure and Performance

Wells compiled a 41-30 record (58% win rate) during his two seasons with the team. In the NBL26 regular season, the 36ers finished at 23-10, which stands as the second-best record in franchise history.

Wells led the team to the NBL Championship Series in NBL26, where they ultimately lost to the Sydney Kings in a decisive Game 5. The Kings clinched the title on Easter Sunday with a 113-101 overtime victory. This marked the Kings' third title in five seasons, while Adelaide's last championship came in 2002.

Resignation and Contract

Although Wells had signed a contract extension through NBL28 just one week prior to his resignation, he decided to step down after spending time in Utah with his family.

"I have been away from family for much of the past three decades, and I know the decision to step down to be with my family is right." — Mike Wells

He cited time with his sons and seeing his aging father as key factors in his decision to leave.

Statements

Adelaide 36ers Executive Chairman Grant Kelley: "Mike and I have developed a very strong relationship over a relatively short period of time, so this is a decision I receive with genuine sadness. While we would have loved Mike to continue leading the program, we completely understand and respect his decision to prioritize his family."

Background and Next Steps

Wells replaced Scott Ninnis two years ago, who had previously replaced CJ Bruton. The 36ers had dismissed rumors that Wells would leave shortly after the finals loss.

The team announced they will immediately begin searching for a new head coach. General manager Matt Weston stated he is seeking an experienced head coach, and mentioned five-time champion Trevor Gleeson as a potential candidate. Gleeson has returned to the NBL after coaching in Japan since 2024.
