Finnish Space Tech Offers Defence Partnership Potential for Australia
Finnish company ICEYE, operator of the world's largest constellation of small Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites, is being pitched as a key defence collaboration opportunity between Finland and Australia.
A delegation of Finnish companies, led by Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio, has visited Australia to explore deeper ties. At the centre of the pitch is ICEYE, a company already well-established in Australia for disaster management.
Proven Track Record in Disaster Response
ICEYE was selected by the Australian government in 2023 to provide real-time satellite data for disaster management, particularly for floods and bushfires. The company's flood products have been used by over 75 organisations in Australia, including during ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in 2025.
A Finnish government spokesperson noted the company's dual-use potential: "In satellites, the Finnish company ICEYE is a good example. It provides the highest quality of data for the military as well as commercial applications. And that's something that Australia might be interested in."
Beyond Civilian Applications
While ICEYE's current Australian work focuses on natural disasters, Minister Tavio highlighted the satellite's defence capabilities as a potential new area for cooperation.
"Research cooperation between Finland and Australia would lead to faster development of technologies," Tavio stated, framing the satellite technology as a natural extension of broader defence collaboration.
ICEYE itself has expressed interest in expanding its Australian footprint. An ICEYE spokesperson said: "We are actively exploring opportunities to work with Australian partners to support both sovereign capability and broader use of space‑based intelligence."
A Shifting Strategic Landscape
The offering comes against a backdrop of significant strategic change for Finland.
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Finland joined NATO, ending decades of non-alignment. The country shares a long land border with Russia and is a manufacturer of defence technologies including armoured vehicles, mortar systems, and cyber, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems.
Trade Relations and Tariff Context
Australia and Finland already have established trade relationships in mining, telecommunications, and quantum technologies.
When asked about the impact of US tariffs on the European Union, Tavio acknowledged the situation but noted that Finland's trade with the US remained "pretty stable." He described Australia as an important trade partner for diversification.
"Of course, the style with which the Trump administration is doing that often can be found to be rather offensive," Tavio said regarding US tariff negotiations, though he stressed the importance of maintaining stable trade relationships overall.
