Mortal Kombat II: Karl Urban Reveals a Vulnerable Johnny Cage
In a recent interview with IGN, actor Karl Urban discussed his upcoming role as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat II and the unique reasons he was drawn to the character.
"The script presented a version of Johnny Cage unlike anything we've seen before."
Urban explained that the screenplay by Jeremy Slater reimagines the iconic fighter in a surprisingly vulnerable state. The character is written as having neglected his martial arts training, struggling with a failing career, and battling low self-confidence. This departure from the typical cocky, action-hero portrayal resonated deeply with Urban.
The actor praised the script's focus on genuine character development, noting that it prioritized emotional depth over pure spectacle. "I found this approach incredibly relatable," Urban stated.
The Weight of a Legacy
Acknowledging the significant pressure of taking on a role with a massive fan base, Urban shared a personal anecdote. His sons, who first introduced him to the Mortal Kombat games, gave him a clear warning: do not disappoint the fans.
Behind the Scenes: Jax's Journey
The film also stars Mehcad Brooks as Jax. Brooks revealed that he underwent dedicated therapy sessions to better understand his character's motivations. This was partly to overcome difficulties he encountered with the fight choreography in the first film, allowing for a more grounded and powerful performance in the sequel.
Release Date
Mortal Kombat II is scheduled for release on May 8, 2026.
