16 Killed in Fiery Head-On Collision on Trans-Sumatra Highway
A head-on collision between a passenger bus and a fuel tanker truck on the Trans-Sumatra Highway in North Musi Rawas regency, South Sumatra, resulted in 16 fatalities and four injuries. The collision occurred on Wednesday and sparked a fire that engulfed both vehicles.
Incident Details
According to local disaster management agency official Mugono, the intercity bus, carrying at least 20 people, was traveling from Lubuklinggau, South Sumatra, to Jambi when it struck the fuel tanker truck traveling in the opposite direction.
Preliminary findings from authorities suggest the bus may have emitted sparks shortly before impact. The tanker truck was reportedly approaching at high speed, allowing little time to avoid a collision.
Casualties
The collision resulted in the deaths of 16 people:
- The bus driver
- 13 bus passengers
- The tanker driver
- The tanker driver's assistant
Four bus passengers survived the crash. Among the survivors, three sustained severe burn injuries and one had minor injuries. Authorities are verifying the passenger manifest to determine the total number of fatalities, and the death toll may change as the investigation continues.
Response and Aftermath
Firefighters extinguished the blaze as thick smoke and flames rose from the wreckage. Rescue workers, including disaster officers and traffic police, evacuated victims and cleared debris. Some victims were pinned inside the vehicles, which complicated rescue efforts and caused traffic disruptions along the highway. Survivors were transported to a nearby health clinic for treatment.
