"I would prefer a New York Knicks championship over an Academy Award."

Actor Timothée Chalamet has been involved in several notable events in 2026, including a public appearance at a basketball playoff game, a statement regarding his preference for a sports championship over an acting award, and winning his first Golden Globe for a leading film role.

Knicks Playoff Game Appearance

On May 6, 2026, Chalamet and Kylie Jenner attended the second game of the NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals Playoffs between the New York Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden. The couple wore matching denim jeans and orange jackets. Photographs show Chalamet placing his hand on Jenner's back as they walked to their seats.

Chalamet skipped the 2026 Met Gala on May 4 to watch the Knicks, while Jenner attended the Met Gala. The couple have been publicly linked since April 2023 and have attended multiple Knicks games together.

Statement on Award Preferences

During a courtside interview at the NBA Finals, Chalamet stated that he would prefer a New York Knicks championship over an Academy Award. The Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 to win the NBA title. Chalamet attended multiple finals games and celebrated with the team in the locker room, declining goggles for champagne showers, stating he does not deserve them as he is not an athlete.

Chalamet has received three Oscar nominations for Best Actor, for Call Me by Your Name (2018), A Complete Unknown (2025), and Marty Supreme (2026), but has not yet won. The Knicks' championship ended a 53-year title drought since 1973. Other celebrities who attended finals games include Spike Lee, Larry David, Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld, Mariska Hargitay, Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Tracy Morgan, Taylor Swift, and President Donald Trump.

Golden Globe Win

Chalamet received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his performance in Josh Safdie’s film, Marty Supreme. The film portrays a young New Yorker's journey to table tennis superstardom. This marks Chalamet's first Golden Globe win after four prior nominations.

During his acceptance speech, Chalamet thanked director Josh Safdie, the cast, his parents, and his partner, Kylie Jenner, without naming her. He acknowledged his fellow nominees and expressed gratitude, humorously referencing Kevin O’Leary from Shark Tank.

Other nominees in the category included Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, Ethan Hawke, Lee Byung-hun, and Jesse Plemons. Chalamet's previous Golden Globe nominations included roles in Call Me by Your Name (2018) and A Complete Unknown (2025). For Marty Supreme, Chalamet also received a Critics Choice Award and an Actor Award nomination.

Film Performance and Promotion

Marty Supreme achieved a $27 million opening at the box office, marking the largest in A24's history. The film's budget was reportedly between $60 million and $70 million. Its promotional tour included events such as an underground table tennis tournament and a stunt at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

Chalamet commented on his involvement in the film's promotion, stating it was "in the spirit of Marty" and an effort to promote an original film. He mentioned trying to maximize visibility through various means, including merchandise and media appearances.

Director Josh Safdie noted Chalamet's commitment during production, highlighting his willingness to perform multiple takes. Marty Supreme is Safdie’s first feature in six years, and his first solo-directed film since 2008. His previous feature was Uncut Gems (2019), co-directed with his brother Benny. The cast also includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, and Tyler, the Creator.
