University of Melbourne in Talks Over Ramsay Centre Scholarships

The University of Melbourne is currently in discussions with the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation regarding the provision of scholarships for arts students. The talks, confirmed by the university on Thursday, would grant students access to one of the country's most generous undergraduate scholarship programs.

Background of the Ramsay Centre

The Ramsay Centre was established in 2017 with a $3.3 billion endowment from the late healthcare magnate Paul Ramsay. It has been a source of controversy in higher education due to its efforts to establish a "bachelor of Western civilisation" degree, which critics argue promotes Eurocentric values.

Union Concern Over Academic Priorities

The National Tertiary Education Union at the university expressed concern that the deal could influence academic priorities. Union members fear funding would be focused on subjects such as history, philosophy, classics, English literature, and art history, while excluding areas like Indigenous studies, Asian studies, and Arabic studies. The union has called for transparency and consultation regarding the potential agreement.

University and Ramsay Centre Assurances

The university has stated that any agreement would be limited to offering scholarships through existing Faculty of Arts degrees. No new degrees or majors would be created, and the Ramsay Centre would have no influence over curriculum or teaching.

The Ramsay Centre has also stated its commitment to academic freedom and institutional autonomy.
