Google Discontinues Project Mariner, Integrates Features Into Existing Products
Google has officially pulled the plug on Project Mariner, its experimental web automation feature, as of May 4, 2026, according to the project's landing page. The experimental tool, which could perform tasks across the web, has been "voyaged to other Google products," signaling a strategic consolidation of its agentic capabilities.
Project Mariner was first revealed in December 2024, and later updated to handle up to 10 simultaneous tasks. Over the past year, Google has been quietly folding its core technology into other services.
Key integrations include:
- Gemini Agent, which can now archive emails and assist with booking hotels.
- AI Mode, Google's AI-powered search feature, which absorbed Mariner's agentic capabilities.
Related Developments
Earlier this year, Google demonstrated "auto-browse," a new AI feature for Chrome that can execute multi-step tasks, such as researching flight costs. Google has not confirmed whether auto-browse leverages Project Mariner's underlying technology.
The sunset of Project Mariner may also clear the deck for other AI announcements expected at Google I/O, which kicks off on May 19th.
