Injustice 3? Not So Fast: NetherRealm Confirms Another Mortal Kombat Is Coming

In a recent interview with Collider, NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon confirmed that the studio is actively developing another entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise, putting rumors of an immediate switch to Injustice 3 on hold.

"We are actively pursuing, or definitely pursuing, another Mortal Kombat game. We're definitely doing more as well."

Boon elaborated on the studio's current workload, hinting at a broader expansion beyond just video games:

"So there's a lot of pots on the stove; not just with games, with other forms of media and whatnot, so we've got a lot of great announcements that are coming."

The Current State of Play

  • Recent Success: The last entry, Mortal Kombat 1 (2023), has proven to be a major hit, selling over 8 million units worldwide.
  • End of Support: Official support for Mortal Kombat 1 concluded approximately one year ago, signaling a shift in development focus.
  • Leak vs. Reality: A recent industry leak suggested that NetherRealm's next major project would be Injustice 3. Boon’s latest comments confirm that while other projects may be in the works, a new Mortal Kombat title is definitively on the table.

Beyond the Games

The timing of this confirmation is notable. The Mortal Kombat 2 film is set to release this week, which may indicate a coordinated push across multiple media platforms.

The key takeaway: NetherRealm is not abandoning its flagship fighting series. While the studio has "a lot of pots on the stove," fans can expect another Mortal Kombat game to be a major priority.
