Mortal Kombat Creator Eyes Dream Crossover with Street Fighter and Marvel
Ed Boon, the co-creator of the legendary Mortal Kombat franchise, has revealed his ambition to bring iconic characters from Street Fighter and Marvel into future Mortal Kombat titles. During an interview with Collider, Boon confirmed that NetherRealm Studios is already planning its next Mortal Kombat installment, though specific details remain under wraps.
"I would love to see a Street Fighter character in Mortal Kombat. I’m a huge fan of Street Fighter."
Boon expressed a strong personal desire to bridge the gap between the two fighting game giants. He also expanded on the potential for superhero crossovers, referencing the studio's previous success with darker characters.
"We’ve had Joker as a really dark character, but DC and Marvel, it would be a lot of fun to see those characters as well."
Addressing the historic rivalry between Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, Boon dismissed any notion of bad blood, describing the competition as "fun." He emphasized a hope for mutual success, especially with both franchises currently enjoying a resurgence in cinema.
"At the end of the day, I think we'll see, when both films have been released, how they both did and stuff. But honestly, I'd love to see them both do well, just because there's an audience for more, which would be great."
A major hurdle for any potential crossover remains the stark contrast in tone and content.
NetherRealm, owned by Warner Bros. Games, has a long history of integrating guest characters from violent media, such as The Terminator and Ghostface. However, Capcom's Street Fighter is traditionally less gory, raising significant questions regarding licensing and content compatibility. The studio previously attempted a toned-down crossover with Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe back in 2008.
