Federal Budget Preview: $64 Billion in Savings, Net Figure Under Wraps
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has confirmed that next week's federal budget will deliver a net saving, though the precise figure will not be revealed until Tuesday night.
$64 Billion in Re-Prioritization
Chalmers, alongside Finance Minister Katy Gallagher, announced that the budget will include $64 billion in re-prioritization and savings, largely derived from identifying uncommitted grant program funding.
"There will be a net save in the budget, and we will release all of those figures on Tuesday night."
A Larger Than Usual Savings Task
While the nominal savings of $64 billion is larger than typical budgets, Chalmers emphasized that after accounting for new spending pressures and government priorities, the final net saving will be modest.
Key Point
Chalmers told reporters: "What we are conveying to you today is just how seriously we have taken this savings task."
