The 9-1-1 Season 9 Finale: A Hospital in Crisis and New Beginnings

The ninth season of the television series "9-1-1" concluded with a finale set in a hospital, featuring several key character developments and the resolution of an ongoing plotline.

Assassination Attempt on Athena Grant

Athena Grant, who was shot by Detective Hooks in the previous episode, was targeted in the hospital by Anatoly, the son of Nikolay Caster. Anatoly was motivated by revenge. During the incident, Anatoly stabbed Eddie, shot another individual, and attempted to kill Athena. He was subdued by Harry. Detective Hooks was arrested upon entering Athena's hospital room, where officers were waiting.

Character Developments

Following the resolution of the attack, several characters experienced new career or personal milestones:

  • Athena Grant: Promoted to the rank of detective. According to co-creator Tim Minear, a dream sequence featuring her deceased former partner, McCluskey, influenced her decision to accept the position.

  • Buck (Oliver Stark): Signed legal documents to become the guardian of Theo, a preschooler. Theo is Buck's biological son via sperm donation. According to the show's co-creator Tim Minear, this storyline is expected to be a major plot in Season 10. Actor Oliver Stark stated that Buck's decision stemmed from a "sense of duty and obligation" following the deaths of Theo's parents in a car accident.

  • May Grant (Corinne Massiah): Announced her intention to train to become a nurse, a career direction previously foreshadowed.

  • Eddie (Ryan Guzman): Survived being stabbed by Anatoly and was rescued after Athena's situation was resolved.

Additional Context

Season nine dealt with the death of Bobby (Peter Krause); the finale shifts focus to career and family storylines for the remaining characters.
