Diplomats from Southeast Asian nations convened in Malaysia on Monday to address the ongoing border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia.
The recent clashes have reportedly resulted in at least 41 fatalities and the displacement of approximately one million individuals across both nations, according to official figures.
The primary objective of the meeting is to reactivate a ceasefire agreement previously brokered in July. This agreement was facilitated by Malaysia, serving as chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and included engagement from then-US President Donald Trump.
This gathering represents the first direct discussion between Thai and Cambodian officials since hostilities resumed on December 8. Both countries have attributed responsibility for the renewed conflicts to the other.
The historical context of the border dispute extends over a century, originating from the demarcation established during the French occupation of Cambodia.
