California Hospitals to Provide Free Diapers to Newborns Starting Summer 2025

View source

Starting summer 2025, every newborn delivered in a participating California hospital will receive 400 diapers at no cost to families.

Program Overview

Hospitals will distribute the diapers at discharge, as part of a new state initiative designed to ease financial pressure on new parents.

Goal

The program aims to reduce financial burden on families, prevent trade-offs between diapers and other essentials, and support infant health through an adequate diaper supply.

Statement

California Health & Human Services Secretary Kim Johnson said the program helps families focus on bonding rather than diaper costs.

Implementation

In the first year, CalRx and Baby2Baby will prioritize hospitals serving a high number of Medi-Cal patients. The program will later expand to additional hospitals and birthing centers.

Diaper Specifications

The diapers are manufactured for Baby2Baby and co-labeled "Golden State Start."

Partnership

Baby2Baby Co-CEOs Norah Weinstein and Kelly Sawyer Patricof expressed gratitude to Governor Newsom and pride in partnering on the initiative.
