Darwin Man Charged After Hotel Attack; Woman Flees for Help

A 41-year-old man faces a raft of serious charges following a violent incident at a Darwin Esplanade hotel, where a woman fled her room to seek help from other guests and staff.

Northern Territory Police have charged the man with three counts of aggravated assault, one count of deprivation of liberty, one count of sexual intercourse without consent, one count of gross indecency without consent, and one count of armed with an offensive weapon.

The incident occurred on Friday morning. Police responded to a domestic disturbance at around 8 am and arrested the man at the scene. The female victim received medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

The man has been served with a domestic violence order and remains in custody. He is scheduled to appear in Darwin Local Court on Monday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Caragh Hen stated that police condemn the behavior and thanked bystanders for assisting the woman.

Separate Incident: Woman Arrested After Stabbing Two People on Smith Street Mall

A 45-year-old woman was arrested later that day after allegedly stabbing two people with scissors on Smith Street Mall.

Police reported that a security guard intervened at around 9 pm, separating the alleged offender from the two victims.

  • The male victim, known to the woman, sustained a superficial cut to his arm.
  • A second victim, related to the woman, received minor scratches and a superficial cut to her upper arm.

Neither victim required hospitalization.

The woman remains in custody and is expected to be charged with:

  • Two counts of aggravated assault
  • Two counts of intend serious harm
  • Breach of a domestic violence order
  • Breach of a suspended sentence
  • Go armed in public
