Health Experts Urge Australians to Get Blood Pressure Checks This May
Health experts are encouraging Australians of all ages to have a blood pressure check at a GP or pharmacy during May.
"Get your blood pressure checked. It takes minutes, it costs nothing, and it could save your life."
— School principal Shane Elliott, stroke survivor
The Silent Threat
High blood pressure affects one in three Australians, but nearly half of those affected are unaware of their condition. The condition contributes to over 25,000 deaths annually and is a primary risk factor for stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, and dementia.
Expert Warning
Stroke Foundation chief executive Dr. Lisa Murphy stated: "High blood pressure is the single biggest preventable risk factor for stroke, heart disease, kidney disease and dementia." She added that it can be managed through lifestyle changes or medication, but requires regular checks.
A Personal Story
School principal Shane Elliott experienced a stroke in 2014. He said he was unaware of the link between high blood pressure and stroke. His advice to all Australians is clear:
"Get your blood pressure checked. It takes minutes, it costs nothing, and it could save your life."
National Action
The Stroke Foundation is a co-founding member of the National Hypertension Taskforce, which aims to more than double the number of Australians with effectively controlled blood pressure by 2030.
Take action this May — visit your GP or local pharmacy for a quick, potentially life-saving blood pressure check.
