The Cook Labor Government has announced $24.6 million in funding from 2026-27 to 2028-29 for infrastructure and public safety services in the Kimberley region ahead of a total solar eclipse on 22 July 2028.

The total solar eclipse will have a totality period of over five minutes, making it one of the longest globally this century.

Funding will support upgrades to camping sites, water and wastewater facilities in Kununurra, and regional telecommunications capacity.

A proposed public viewing site along the Great Northern Highway within the line of totality is included.

The investment aims to provide a legacy for ongoing tourism development, large-scale event capacity, and economic opportunities, including for Aboriginal people and businesses.
