West Australian Government Allocates $24.6 Million for Kimberley Solar Eclipse Infrastructure

The Cook Labor Government has announced $24.6 million in funding from 2026-27 to 2028-29 for infrastructure and public safety services in the Kimberley region ahead of a total solar eclipse on 22 July 2028.

  • The total solar eclipse will have a totality period of over five minutes, making it one of the longest globally this century.

  • Funding will support upgrades to camping sites, water and wastewater facilities in Kununurra, and regional telecommunications capacity.

  • A proposed public viewing site along the Great Northern Highway within the line of totality is included.

  • The investment aims to provide a legacy for ongoing tourism development, large-scale event capacity, and economic opportunities, including for Aboriginal people and businesses.
