A Mother’s Lesson in Kenyan Hospitality
Bertha Ngumbi, a mother in Kenya, instilled a tradition of hospitality in her children, including the author, Esther Ngumbi.
As a child, the author and her siblings were annoyed by their mother's insistence on serving tea and sharing meals with visitors, including strangers. The mother's kindness was inspired by her own mother, who would give away food meant for her children to travelers.
Despite her children's resentment, Bertha Ngumbi stated she would not change her behavior.
"I will not change my behavior."
As an adult, the author now appreciates her mother's influence and practices similar hospitality.
