Australian Council Reminds Residents Public Bins Are for Small Items Only

"Public bins are intended for small, on-the-go items, not household waste."

Liverpool City Council in Sydney's west is reminding residents that public bins are strictly for small, on-the-go waste—not household rubbish. The reminder comes after a recent incident where a large garbage bag of household waste was dumped into a public bin, blocking the entrance and causing overflow. Even after the bag was removed, the bin still had space for other items.

Fines for disposing of household waste in public bins range from $150 to $1,000, though a council spokesperson noted that this penalty is rarely imposed.

To help residents manage their waste properly, the council encourages use of its dedicated kerbside services:

  • Green-lid bins for compostable waste.
  • Yellow-lid bins for recyclables.
  • Red-lid general waste bins, which can be upgraded from 140L to 240L for an additional $197.30 per year.

Free household clean-ups are available twice per year for bulky items. Items not accepted in kerbside bins can be taken to the Community Recycling Centre.
