Arjan Brussee Developing New European Game Engine 'The Immense Engine'

"No one is currently making an engine that is fully European-hosted, built by Europeans, and complies with European rules and guidelines."

The Immense Engine: A New European Challenger in 3D Simulation

Arjan Brussee, co-founder of Guerrilla Games and former technical director at Epic Games, is developing a new game engine called "The Immense Engine." Brussee has stated the engine is intended as a European-hosted alternative to existing engines such as Unreal Engine (American) and Unity (American/Chinese).

Engine Design and Purpose

According to Brussee, The Immense Engine is designed for both gaming and non-gaming 3D simulations, including applications in defense and logistics. The engine integrates artificial intelligence from the ground up and utilizes a new construction approach, which Brussee has differentiated from current engines that rely on mouse-based menu interfaces.

"With a good AI framework, the work of ten to fifteen people could be accomplished."

In comments made to the Dutch podcast De Technoloog, Brussee stated that existing engines like Unreal were "made for and by people who have to click through a menu with a mouse." The new engine aims to bypass traditional menu-driven workflows in favor of AI-assisted development.

Current Status

Brussee has described the engine development as being in its early stages. He is currently based in the Netherlands working as an independent developer.

Background

  • 1990s: Brussee programmed Epic's Jazz Jackrabbit games.
  • 2003: Co-founded Guerrilla Games.
  • Later: Co-founded Boss Key Productions with Cliff Bleszinski.
  • Recent: Returned to Epic Games for eight years as global director of product management for Unreal Engine.
