On Saturday, as Hungary's Tisza party took office, Zsolt Hegedus—an orthopaedic surgeon expected to be nominated as health minister—danced on stage during the celebration.

Spontaneous Encore

Hegedus had previously danced spontaneously after Tisza's landslide victory, a moment that went viral. Though he initially planned not to repeat the performance, he changed his mind after sensing the audience's anticipation.

"When the music started … I could see that the audience had been waiting for this so eagerly. I didn't want to let down the people."
"It was almost like having fans; they started celebrating me like a rock star."

A Platform for Health

Hegedus stated he wants to use his newfound popularity to promote health-conscious lifestyles, mental wellbeing, and community activities like dance halls (táncház).

"It's not that I'm going to start dancing in parliament, but I want to use this popularity to encourage people to adopt a health-conscious lifestyle and focus on mental wellbeing."

Context of Change

Hegedus is an internationally recognized orthopaedic surgeon who spent over 10 years working for the UK's NHS. His rise comes as Tisza party leader Péter Magyar succeeds Viktor Orbán after 16 years in power.

Reflecting on the political shift, Hegedus noted: "The weight has begun to lift from people's shoulders." He also observed the disappearance of billboards that had promoted fears about the EU and Ukraine.

The inauguration event itself marked a symbolic break with the past, featuring the return of the EU flag to parliament and the playing of the European anthem.
