Lawsuit Details

"The lawsuit alleges defamation per se and defamation by implication, claiming that the film's portrayal of law enforcement characters has caused substantial harm."

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are being sued by two Miami-Dade police officers, Jason Smith and Jonathan Santana, over the Netflix movie The Rip.

The officers assert that they were the inspiration for the main characters—Lieutenant Dane Dumars (played by Matt Damon) and Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne (played by Ben Affleck).

The film is based on a true story about Miami-Dade Police Captain Chris Casiano and depicts officers finding millions in a cartel stash house, leading to internal conflict.

The officers seek compensatory and punitive damages, attorney fees, a public retraction and correction, and a more prominent disclaimer stating that the events portrayed did not occur aside from a large seizure.

Context

The film is currently streaming on Netflix. The lawsuit also targets Affleck and Damon's production companies Falco Productions and Artists Equity.
