Injury Update
Queensland Origin halfback Tom Dearden has been sidelined for 6-8 weeks with a syndesmosis ankle injury, putting his State of Origin campaign in jeopardy. The Maroons playmaker is expected to miss Origin 1 and 2, and could potentially be ruled out for the entire series.
Replacement Candidates
With Dearden out, Queensland coach Billy Slater must select a replacement. Two leading contenders have emerged:
- Daly Cherry-Evans (Sydney Roosters): 26 Origin games, former Queensland captain. Has expressed his availability for the series.
- Sam Walker (Sydney Roosters): Current Roosters No.7, in strong form this season.
What the Experts Say
"Sam Walker is probably just in front. His unpredictable style is suited to Origin's faster ruck."
— Andrew Johns, rugby league pundit
Johns has ruled out Jamal Fogarty, Tanah Boyd, Ezra Mam, and Kalyn Ponga as viable halfback options.
"Cherry-Evans brings experience and game management. Queensland already has attacking threats in Reece Walsh, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, and Cameron Munster, reducing the need for Walker's creativity."
— Brad Fittler, rugby league pundit
Coach's Position
Slater has confirmed he will not consult Cameron Munster regarding his preference for a halves partner. The Maroons coach also described the tackle that injured Dearden—executed by Josh Addo-Carr—as accidental and not illegal.
