Pop Star Dua Lipa Sues Samsung Over Unauthorized Image Use on Packaging
Dua Lipa filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics on Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, alleging the company used her copyrighted image without permission on cardboard packaging for televisions sold in 2024.
Lawsuit Details
According to the filing, the photograph in question—titled "Dua Lipa — Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024"—was taken before a performance at the 2024 Austin City Limits festival. Lipa’s lawyers state that she owns all rights, title, and interest in the image.
Lipa became aware of the image’s use in June 2025 and demanded its removal. The lawsuit claims Samsung repeatedly refused to comply with this request.
The complaint includes allegations of:
- Copyright infringement
- Violation of California’s right of publicity statute
- Claims under the federal Lanham Act
- Trademark claims
Damages and Claims
Lipa is seeking a permanent injunction, no less than $15 million in actual damages, plus punitive damages and legal costs.
The lawsuit alleges that Samsung financially benefited from the appearance of Lipa’s endorsement. The filing includes screenshots of social media posts from fans indicating the packaging influenced purchasing decisions. One example cited is a screenshot showing a fan stating they would purchase the TV "just because Dua is on it."
"The unauthorized use has caused and continues to cause dilution of Lipa’s brand identity and commercial goodwill by falsely conveying her approval or endorsement of the products."
Lipa stated in the filing that she has been highly selective in endorsements and has had brand deals with Apple, Porsche, Versace, Bulgari, and Nespresso.
Responses
A Samsung spokesperson declined to comment, citing pending litigation. Dua Lipa’s lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment as of the report.
