"Messages like these are never welcome."
Adelaide Crows player Josh Rachele has publicly shared an abusive direct message he received on Instagram, in which an individual told him to "end your life please."
Rachele posted a screenshot of the message with the caption: "hope you're happy with yourself pal."
In a subsequent statement, Rachele emphasized that "mental health matters in every space, including sport" and urged fans to "choose kindness."
Ongoing Investigations
According to ABC News, the Adelaide Crows are investigating the incident and plan to file a report with relevant cyber authorities.
The message was sent following a game where the Crows defeated Richmond at the MCG on Sunday, during which Rachele received a free kick in the final minutes.
Broader Mental Health Context in the AFL
Mental health in the AFL has been a prominent topic recently, particularly after the death of Jaryd Dawson, brother of Crows Captain Jordan Dawson.
In a separate incident, the Carlton Football Club was fined $75,000 for delaying the removal of player Elijah Hollands during a mental health episode.
Geelong player Bailey Smith has also called for a men's mental health round in the AFL, stating he "felt sick during the week" and hoping the AFL community would support those affected.
