Cool on the go: Sony's latest wearable chills the neck with improved performance and battery life.
Sony has released the Reon Pocket Pro Plus, an updated version of its personal wearable cooling device, for purchase in the United Kingdom and Europe. The device is available through Sony’s official store and online retailers including Amazon. Pricing is set at £199 in the UK and €220 in European markets.
Technical Specifications and Performance
The Reon Pocket Pro Plus utilizes the Peltier effect to cool a metal plate that rests against the skin at the base of the neck. According to Sony, the surface temperature of this plate has been reduced by an additional two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) compared to the previous model, representing a 20 percent improvement in cooling performance.
The device features an "evolved cooling algorithm" that Sony states monitors temperature changes on the device and in the surrounding environment with greater accuracy.
Design and Construction
The device’s cooling fins have been redesigned, with Sony stating they provide 40 percent more stability. The product includes upgraded flexible arms designed for a secure fit around the neck and upper back. The exhaust vent features an adjustable length and angle to direct warm air away from the body, including when worn under high-collared shirts.
The Reon Pocket Pro Plus is compatible with the Reon Pocket Tag 2, a second-generation sensor that monitors ambient temperature and humidity. Sony states this sensor is 18 percent smaller than its predecessor and can be attached to a strap or carabiner.
Battery and Operation
Sony reports battery life of up to 10 hours when the device is used on the second-highest cooling setting. A companion smartphone application provides manual controls, though the device can operate without a connected smartphone.
Availability and Development
The device is available in the UK and Europe. Sony has not announced plans for release in the United States. Sony began development of the Reon cooling device in 2017, followed by a crowdfunding launch in 2019. It subsequently became available in Asia before entering Western markets.
