Incident in Palmyra, Syria
On Saturday, an ambush attributed to an ISIS gunman in central Syria resulted in the deaths of two U.S. service members and one U.S. civilian, as confirmed by U.S. Central Command. Additionally, three other service members sustained injuries during the incident, which occurred in the city of Palmyra.
Official Statements and Context
Following the attack, U.S. President Trump stated on Truth Social that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa expressed strong disapproval of the incident and indicated that retaliation would ensue.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reported via social media that the assailant was neutralized by partner forces. Hegseth further stated that the United States would pursue those who target Americans globally.
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell clarified on X that the shooting took place as soldiers were concluding a "key leader engagement" as part of their mission to support counterterrorism operations in the region.
Ongoing Counterterrorism Efforts
U.S. Central Command has reported advising, assisting, and enabling over 22 operations against ISIS with partners in Syria since October. These operations have led to the deaths of five ISIS members and the capture of 19 others.
