Sony’s New “AI Camera Assistant” Draws Criticism for Flat, Overprocessed Images

Sony has integrated a new "AI Camera Assistant" into its upcoming Xperia 1 VIII smartphone. The company states the tool "suggests various expressive options with different adjustments to create memorable photos" and is paired with a larger telephoto sensor for improved hardware.

Sony shared example images demonstrating the AI enhancement, which show significantly brighter scenes with reduced color and contrast. The feature has received widespread criticism on social media for producing flat, overprocessed images that lose detail, a stark departure from the contrast-rich photos many users prefer.

A Broader Industry Shift

This development reflects a broader industry trend where smartphone cameras increasingly apply heavy computational processing. The result is a style characterized by uniform brightness and reduced contrast—a look that often sacrifices depth for clarity.

Google recently announced a similar "Smart enhance" tool for the Instagram Edits app on Android, which also brightens shadows, but to a lesser degree. The shift away from contrast-rich images has been observed in recent Google Pixel models, which have adopted a flatter, more neutral tone.

Some Brands Hold the Line

While Sony and Google lean into this brighter, more uniform aesthetic, other manufacturers maintain more distinctive stylistic choices. Phones like the Oppo Find X9 Ultra and Motorola Razr Fold continue to apply heavier contrast and more saturated color profiles, offering a visual signature that stands apart from the industry's current trend toward computational uniformity.
