General Catalyst Takes Aim at a16z in Viral "Woof AI" Parody

A new marketing video from General Catalyst has ignited a public feud with rival venture firm Andreessen Horowitz, drawing comparisons to a hip-hop beef.

Venture capital firm General Catalyst (GC) posted a video on X that directly mimics the classic "Old Mac vs. PC" commercials. The sketch features two characters: one representing a stereotypical VC firm—portrayed as tall with a bald head, widely interpreted as a parody of Marc Andreessen, co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz (a16z)—and a second, cooler character representing GC.

The drama centers on a robotic dog.

In the video, the "VC" character introduces an AI robot dog named "Woof AI," claiming it eliminates the need for a real dog. The "GC" character expresses interest but notes the firm's "high bar for responsibility." The VC character then kicks the robot dog, which immediately chases him off screen.

The post has exploded online, racking up 2.4 million views, thousands of likes, and hundreds of shares and comments.

Marc Andreessen himself fired back on X multiple times.

In his responses, Andreessen stated that the video made GC look "smarmy" and suggested that a16z might launch a counter-campaign titled, "We're the VC who doesn't sneer at your idea." Several other a16z partners and staff also rallied to the firm's defense.

VSC Ventures VC Jay Kapoor added fuel to the fire, commenting that for those familiar with a 409A valuation, the exchange is comparable to the "Kendrick vs. Drake" rivalry.
