Digital Sales Dominate: Square Enix and Capcom Report Record-Breaking Figures

The shift towards digital game purchases continues to accelerate, with two of Japan's biggest publishers reporting that the vast majority of their game sales are now digital.

Square Enix revealed it moved 26.8 million game units in the past fiscal year. A staggering 21.7 million of those (81.3%) were digital purchases.

81.3% of Square Enix's total game sales were digital in the last fiscal year.

Capcom reported an even higher digital penetration, with digital sales accounting for 93% of its total game sales—up significantly from 90% the previous year. The company does not expect this trend to slow.

Capcom expects its digital sales share to reach 95.4% in the next fiscal year.

A key driver of this shift is the growing dominance of the PC platform. Capcom noted that its PC platform contributed to over 54% of its total sales, highlighting a major consumer preference for digital storefronts over physical retail.

These findings come from Square Enix's FY26/3 financial results and Capcom's financial report, as cited by Wccftech.
