Seth Rogen Blasts AI Scriptwriting: "The Most Stupid Dog Shit"

"If you want to use AI to write a script, you shouldn't be a writer."

Actor and producer Seth Rogen voiced strong opposition to using artificial intelligence for scriptwriting during an interview with Brut at the Cannes Film Festival.

Rogen did not mince words. He stated that individuals who consider using AI to write scripts "shouldn't be a writer" and should pursue another profession entirely. He described the AI-generated content he has observed as "the most stupid dog shit."

At the core of his argument is the craft itself. Rogen asserted that relying on AI bypasses what he described as the essential writing process. He added that a tool designed to reduce writing is fundamentally unappealing to him because he genuinely enjoys the writing process.

Industry Context

Rogen's comments arrive as the entertainment industry undergoes significant shifts related to AI adoption. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently updated its rules to include specific restrictions on AI use for Oscar-eligible acting performances.

The Film: Tangles

Rogen attended Cannes for the animated feature Tangles, directed by Leah Nelson. The film is entirely hand-drawn and depicts a young woman coping with her mother's Alzheimer's diagnosis.

Rogen served as a producer and voice actor for the film, which features an all-star voice cast including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Abbi Jacobson, Bryan Cranston, Sarah Silverman, Bowen Yang, Wanda Sykes, Beanie Feldstein, and Samira Wiley.

Rogen confirmed that no AI was used in the production of Tangles.

The film premiered at Cannes and received a seven-minute ovation. Rogen co-founded the Alzheimer's nonprofit Hilarity for Charity with his wife, Lauren Miller Rogen. Miller Rogen told Deadline that the movie resonated deeply with her, following her late mother's Alzheimer's diagnosis.
