NRL Round 18: Controversial Calls Dominate as Knights Edge Tigers, Raiders Down Dragons

A weekend of tight, error-riddled football was overshadowed by contentious Bunker decisions, leaving coaches and players frustrated with officiating.

Newcastle Knights 12 – 6 Wests Tigers

At McDonald Jones Stadium, June 28, 2026

The Newcastle Knights snatched a dramatic 12-6 victory over the Wests Tigers in a match defined by 23 errors and a 105-metre match-winning try in the final six minutes.

Match-Winning Try

Wests Tigers fullback Jahream Bula dropped a high kick from Adam Doueihi in his own in-goal area. Knights centre Bradman Best collected the loose ball and passed to Dominic Young, who sprinted past defenders Heamasi Makasini and Jarome Luai before passing back to Best to score.

Other Key Events

  • First-half try: Tony Sukkar scored for the Wests Tigers following a strip by Doueihi on Dane Gagai.
  • Knights try: Dylan Lucas crossed for Newcastle.
  • Disallowed try: Newcastle had a first-minute try overturned due to an obstruction call against Jermaine McEwen.
  • Tigers injury: Taylan May left the field with a third shoulder dislocation, with reports suggesting the injury may end his season.

Coaches React

Tigers coach Benji Marshall said: "For most of that game we were the better team, and I think we lost it. There are a couple of key moments that are hurting us... Heamasi makes that break, we get a six again, but I don't know how that's not a sin bin [for Ponga]. We'll ask about that because that's a professional foul every day of the week. But that's not why we lost."

Canberra Raiders 24 – 16 St. George Illawarra Dragons

Key Incidents

  • Savage try (55th minute): Xavier Savage scored after a kick chase, with Bunker official Adam Gee confirming the try. Replays suggested Dragons centre Simi Sasagi may have touched the ball forward before Savage caught it.
  • Holmes grounding attempt: Early in the match, Valentine Holmes attempted to ground a kick but was pushed in the back by Savage, according to Dragons interim coach Dean Young. The incident was ruled a 20-metre restart.
  • Captain's challenge: Late in the match, a one-on-one strip decision was challenged, but the Bunker did not overturn the ruling.

Coaches & Players Respond

Dragons interim coach Dean Young said: "I'm confused by that one... Savage shoves him in the back. The momentum stopped Val from putting the ball down... Then there was a one-on-one strip decision at the end where the boys challenged it and the bunker's looking at it in slow-mo. But you need to hear what the ref is saying and when he's saying held."

Dragons co-captain Damien Cook added: "To be honest, it was pretty disappointing... even the Canberra Raiders team were pretty shocked at the decision. They didn't even have a kicker down there... I feel like they deserve better."

Previous Match Officiating Dispute

In a separate match from NRL Magic Round, Dragons hooker Damien Cook had a try disallowed in controversial circumstances. With the score 12-0 in favour of Penrith, Cook chipped the ball behind the Panthers' defensive line. Penrith winger Brian To'o misjudged the bounce and, as he placed his hands on the ball, Cook kicked it away and regathered to score.

The on-field referee initially awarded the try, but the Bunker overturned the decision, ruling that To'o had possession and that Cook's kick made contact with To'o's hand—classified as dangerous play. Cook received a penalty.

Dragons coach Dean Young said at the time: "The team is not receiving favourable calls on close decisions."

The Dragons lost that match 28-6.

Upcoming Matches

  • Newcastle Knights host the Dolphins next Sunday.
  • Wests Tigers play the St. George Illawarra Dragons at Kogarah.
  • St. George Illawarra Dragons remain at the bottom of the ladder. Interim coach Dean Young is seeking a permanent appointment.
