New South Wales Government Signs Contract for 24-Metre Battery Electric Ferry

Sydney, NSW – The New South Wales government has officially signed contracts for a 24-metre battery electric ferry, set to undergo a 12-month trial beginning in 2028. This timeline marks a two-year delay from the original plan.

Timeline and Service Route

The ferry is expected to enter passenger service in 2029, operating on a new route dedicated to the Sydney Fish Market. The trial will serve as a critical test for the broader transition of Sydney's ferry fleet away from diesel propulsion, a goal originally targeted for 2035.

Design and Construction

  • Design: Developed by Incat Crowther
  • Build: Constructed by Tasmanian shipyard Richardson Devine Marine
  • Model: Based on the existing Parramatta River class ferries

Infrastructure and Charging

Charging infrastructure for the new electric ferry will be installed at Barangaroo wharf, ensuring the vessel can be powered efficiently during its trial period.

Net Zero Commitment

The government has reiterated its commitment to achieving net zero emissions across public transport by 2035. However, no decision has been made on the procurement of additional electric ferries until the trial results are complete.
