Transgrid Launches Annual Aerial Patrol Program to Mitigate Bushfire Risk

"Bushfire risk is something we plan for well before summer arrives."
— Jason Krstanoski, Executive General Manager of Network at Transgrid

Electricity network operator Transgrid has commenced a statewide aerial scan of its powerlines and easements. The annual program, running from February to September, is designed to assess the condition of powerlines and towers while detecting vegetation encroachments.

The 2026 initiative includes visual inspections from helicopters and the capture of high-resolution imagery. Fixed-wing aircraft are conducting 3D LiDAR scans to identify vegetation near transmission lines. An interactive map of planned works is available online for public reference.

"Preventative maintenance is one of the most effective ways to reduce bushfire risk," Krstanoski stated. "These inspections help ensure we’re doing the right work, in the right locations, at the right time — well before extreme conditions occur."

Bay of Plenty Regional Council Conducts River Scanning

Meanwhile, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council has conducted aerial bathymetric LiDAR scanning of several rivers in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. A helicopter equipped with LiDAR flew at low altitude along river channels and margins, with ground surveys also being carried out.

"This work helps us better understand how our rivers function, which is critical for understanding river behaviour, maintaining assets, and protecting people and the environment."
— Niroy Sumeran, Engineering Team Leader at Bay of Plenty Regional Council

Sumeran emphasized that these scans are vital for understanding river behavior, maintaining infrastructure, and safeguarding both communities and the natural environment.
