Wear OS 7 Begins Rolling Out: New UI, Gemini AI, and Better Battery

Google’s latest smartwatch OS introduces live glanceable updates, redesigned widgets, and AI-powered customisation—starting with Pixel Watch models.

Availability and Rollout

  • Wear OS 7 was announced at Google I/O 2026.
  • The update is currently being rolled out to Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Watch 3, and Pixel Watch 4.
  • Google has stated the update will arrive on compatible Galaxy Watches as One UI 9 Watch.
  • A developer preview (Canary build) is immediately available via an emulator for app testing.
  • The full public release for other smartwatches from various manufacturers is expected later in 2026.

User Interface and Core Features

Live Updates

  • A new feature allows real-time, glanceable information to appear on the main watch face as a persistent icon.
  • This includes tracking of ongoing events such as sports scores, workout progress, food delivery status, and ride-hailing arrival times.
  • A card for the live event appears at the top of the notifications feed; tapping it provides expanded details and status.

Widgets

  • The previous "Tiles" feature has been renamed and redesigned as "Widgets."
  • These are dynamic, flexible blocks (described as 2x1 or 2x2 in size) that appear on the watch face, resembling widgets found in Android 16.
  • For devices running Wear OS 4, 5, or 6 that do not receive the full Wear OS 7 update, these new Widgets will be displayed as traditional full-screen Tiles.

Media Controls

  • The system media controls include a new Remote Output Switcher.
  • This allows users to control and switch audio playback between connected devices such as headphones, home speakers, and Google Cast devices directly from the watch.
  • Users can control per-app auto-launch settings for the media player.

Gemini Intelligence and AI Features

A select group of Wear OS 7 devices will receive features powered by Google's Gemini AI later in 2026.

Announced features include:

  • Create My Widget: Allows users to generate custom watch widgets using natural language prompts.
  • Multi-step App Automation: Gemini can assist with tasks such as placing a restaurant order or booking a fitness class via conversational voice commands.

These features are powered by a new AppFunctions API for developers and a redesigned Gemini app featuring "Personal Intelligence" and a "Neural Expressive" interface design.

Battery and Performance

Google reports that Wear OS 7 includes system-level power optimizations that provide up to a 10% improvement in battery life compared to Wear OS 6 across all compatible devices.

Developer and System Updates

  • Watch Face Format version 5 (WFF5): Introduced to simplify watch face development, including new tools like Enhanced Alignment Options and Blend Modes.
  • Workout Tracking: A standardized workout-tracking experience is available for exercise apps to optionally use, aiming for a consistent user interface across applications.

Device Integration

  • Wear OS 7 is designed for enhanced integration with other devices, including future Android XR smart glasses and audio glasses.
  • Users can preview photos taken with connected smart glasses on their smartwatch.
  • Emergency Sharing (Pixel Watch): The update includes a feature where the watch can automatically call selected emergency contacts in addition to emergency services when it detects a fall, loss of pulse, or a car crash.
