Gallrein Defeats Seven-Term Incumbent

In a stunning upset, former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein defeated seven-term incumbent Representative Thomas Massie in the Republican primary election for Kentucky's 4th Congressional District on Tuesday. The Associated Press and other news organizations projected Gallrein as the winner with 54.4% of the vote to Massie's 45.6%, with 72% of votes counted. Massie conceded the race and called Gallrein to congratulate him.

The Most Expensive House Primary in History

The primary shattered records, becoming the most expensive House primary in U.S. history. According to AdImpact, advertising spending totaled between $32 million and $33 million. Ads promoting Gallrein or attacking Massie accounted for over $19 million of that total.

President Donald Trump endorsed Gallrein and released a video message urging voters to support him, calling Massie a "total disaster" and the "worst." Trump also campaigned for Gallrein in the district in March.

Gallrein's campaign was fueled by an advertising blitz funded largely by pro-Trump and pro-Israel groups, including:

  • MAGA KY (a super PAC directed by Trump adviser Chris LaCivita)
  • Groups affiliated with the Republican Jewish Coalition and AIPAC

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth traveled to Kentucky on Monday to appear with Gallrein. The Defense Department stated Hegseth was acting in his personal capacity.

Background on the Incumbent

Massie, first elected in 2012, has frequently broken with Trump on specific issues. According to his own statement, Massie has voted with the Republican Party 91% of the time. Key points of disagreement included:

  • Voting against a key Trump-backed tax and spending package
  • Opposing military action against Iran and Venezuela
  • Co-sponsoring legislation to force the release of Justice Department files related to Jeffrey Epstein
  • Opposing aid to Israel

Trump referred to Massie as a "moron," "nut job," "sleazebag," and "loser" in public statements. Massie described the race as a referendum on whether voters want a representative who will stand up to the president on principle.

Gallrein campaigned on support for Trump's agenda and accused Massie of siding with the "radical left."

Massie noted Kentucky's "sore loser laws" prevent him from running as an independent. Asked about his future, he said: "I don't know what I will do."

Broader Context: Trump's Kingmaking Power

The primary is part of a pattern of Trump-endorsed challengers defeating Republican incumbents who have opposed him. Similar outcomes occurred in:

  • Louisiana: Sen. Bill Cassidy, who voted to convict Trump in his impeachment trial, finished third in his re-election primary.
  • Indiana: Five Trump-backed challengers defeated sitting state senators who resisted a Trump-backed redistricting push.

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) said the results show Trump "will beat you." An anonymous lawmaker described Trump as the party's "kingmaker." University of Kentucky elections expert Stephen Voss stated the result would send a message to Republicans nationwide about Trump's influence.

The 4th Congressional District has not elected a Democrat in two decades, making Gallrein the heavy favorite in the general election.

Other Primary Results

The same day saw primaries in several other states:

  • Georgia: Lt. Governor Burt Jones and businessman Rick Jackson advanced to a runoff for the GOP gubernatorial nomination.
  • Alabama: Trump ally Tommy Tuberville won the Republican primary for governor; former Senator Doug Jones secured the Democratic nomination for governor.
  • Texas: Trump endorsed Attorney General Ken Paxton in his primary runoff against Senator John Cornyn.
  • Kentucky: Trump-backed Representative Andy Barr won the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Mitch McConnell.
