“Tuberville, a former college football coach, will exit the Senate after one term.”
Sen. Tommy Tuberville Wins Alabama GOP Gubernatorial Primary, Setting Up Rematch with Doug Jones
Tuscaloosa, AL – Sen. Tommy Tuberville has won the Republican primary for Alabama governor, as projected by NBC News on Tuesday. He is heavily favored to win the general election in November in a state that has not elected a Democratic governor since 1998 and voted for Donald Trump by 30 points in 2024.
A key endorsement from Trump arrived just one day before the primary. Trump cited Tuberville's voting record as the reason for his endorsement. The former president also endorsed Rep. Barry Moore in the primary to succeed Tuberville in the Senate.
Tuberville’s general election opponent will be former Sen. Doug Jones, who won the Democratic gubernatorial primary. The two are familiar rivals: Jones defeated Tuberville in the 2017 Senate special election but later lost to him in their 2020 rematch.
The winner will replace outgoing Republican Gov. Kay Ivey, who is term-limited.
