Civilization VII's Test of Time Update Adds Single-Civ Play

Firaxis has released the Test of Time update for Sid Meier's Civilization VII, introducing a major new way to play. The update adds Time-Tested civilizations, allowing players to remain with a single civilization throughout the entire campaign, while also revising the game's progression systems and advisor mechanics.

A New Way to Play: Time-Tested Civilizations

Time-Tested civilizations enable players to continue with one civ across all Ages, offering an alternative to the civ-switching system that launched with the game.

This feature was developed in direct response to player feedback and tested through the Firaxis Feature Workshop, where thousands of players participated in shaping the final design.

The update also introduces a new Triumph system, replacing the previous Legacy Paths with approximately 30 possible objectives per Age. Advisor systems have been redesigned to provide guidance without dictating player actions.

Developer Insights

Creative Director Ed Beach shared key details about the update's development:

  • The Time-Tested feature was not part of the original launch plan but was added in response to a cohort of players who preferred to stay with one civilization.
  • Internal balancing adjustments were made after initial workshop feedback indicated Time-Tested civs were too strong.
  • Regarding comparisons to the game Humankind, Beach noted that Civilization VII's development began before Humankind's announcement, and the two games' systems have different approaches to civ-switching.
  • Beach commented that the game is now more of a strategy sandbox, offering multiple viable pathways for players.

The Civ-Switching Debate

The original Civilization VII design models history as layers, with players changing civilizations at Age transitions to reflect historical challenges and reforms. This design choice has generated discussion among the player base:

Beach acknowledged that some players feel less emotional attachment to their empires when switching civs, while others find the layered approach more immersive. The update aims to cater to both playstyles within the same framework.

Looking Ahead

Beach mentioned that Australia is under consideration for future inclusion but made no formal announcements regarding upcoming content.

With the Test of Time update, Civilization VII now offers players the flexibility to choose their preferred empire-building experience—whether that means evolving through different civilizations or sticking with a single faction from antiquity to the modern era.
