Affordable Care Act Subsidies Nearing Expiration
Millions of individuals in the United States currently depend on Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace credits to manage health insurance costs. These federal subsidies are scheduled to expire at the close of the current year. To date, Congress has not enacted legislation to extend these provisions.
Congressional Action and Proposed Legislation
The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote this week on a plan put forth by Speaker Mike Johnson. This proposed legislation does not include a provision for the extension of the aforementioned expiring ACA credits.
Representative Kiley's Statements
Representative Kevin Kiley (R-California) has expressed support for a temporary extension of the ACA credits. In a recent interview, Kiley characterized Speaker Johnson's proposed plan as "hastily thrown together" and stated that it "does not address the crisis in front of us."
Kiley further commented that the more than 20 million people who utilize ACA credits "shouldn't be forced to pay the price for congressional inaction." He also discussed additional initiatives within the House aimed at addressing potential increases in health care costs, alongside the prospect of achieving bipartisan legislative solutions on the matter.
