Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to launch on Friday, October 23, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Activision and developer Infinity Ward have announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, scheduled for release on Friday, October 23, 2026. The title will be exclusive to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, with no versions planned for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. The game will not be included in Xbox Game Pass at launch.

Campaign

The single-player campaign is set on the Korean Peninsula. The narrative begins with a North Korean invasion of South Korea. Players assume the role of Private Park, a South Korean soldier. Missions also take place in New York City, Paris, and Mumbai. Captain John Price returns as a character operating outside official channels as a rogue agent.

Gameplay Mechanics

Infinity Ward has implemented several changes to core gameplay. The "bloom" mechanic, which introduced random bullet spread, has been removed. Bullets will travel in the precise direction the weapon barrel is pointed. The movement system has been overhauled to allow for dynamic stances that change based on the environment, including leaning, bracing, and parkour. A stamina system has been introduced, causing sprint animations to degrade as stamina depletes.

Day-One Multiplayer Content

The launch-day multiplayer offering includes:

  • 12 new 6v6 maps (no recycled maps)
  • Dedicated Gunfight maps
  • Large-scale "War" maps featuring both infantry and vehicles
  • "Kill Block": a modular map system that reconfigures between matches, offering over 500 possible layouts
  • Return of the DMZ extraction mode

Platform and Availability

Infinity Ward stated that focusing exclusively on current-generation hardware allowed the development team to overcome limitations in map design, visual fidelity, and audio. The game is a new entry in the Modern Warfare series. A teaser video published by Activision on May 28, 2026, showed footage of a multiplayer map in an urban Korean setting. Infinity Ward's co-studio heads, Jack O'Hara and Mark Grigsby, have confirmed the project.

Developer Background and Context

Infinity Ward posted a statement on social media ahead of the announcement, reading: "We are Infinity Ward. We build visceral, immersive combat experiences... Our next game is the result of that mindset. Determined. Bold. Relentless."

The two previous Call of Duty titles were developed by Treyarch for the Black Ops series. Ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 for PlayStation platforms were announced by Treyarch on June 17, 2026, for release in July 2026. According to social media metrics, the announcement of those ports generated more engagement on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram than the Modern Warfare 4 reveal trailer.
