Mozilla unveils Project Nova, a visual overhaul for Firefox, alongside the release of Firefox 151.

Mozilla announced a visual overhaul of its Firefox browser called Project Nova, featuring rounded UI elements, a fire-inspired color palette, and a redesigned Settings section. The update is planned for later this year.

Key Design Changes

  • Project Nova introduces rounded toolbar and tabs, updated icons for consistency across themes, and a compact mode that condenses browser controls.
  • The redesign will improve access to tab groups, split view, and vertical tabs.
  • New wallpapers and color themes are included, with light and dark modes. Mozilla is also exploring controls for tab shape and other UI elements.

Firefox 151 Release

  • Mozilla released Firefox 151 on the same day, adding support for the Web Serial API, which allows websites to control hardware devices without native apps.
  • The release also includes an updated Firefox Home page design, new wallpapers, and the ability to merge multiple PDFs in the browser's PDF viewer.

Privacy and AI Features

The new Settings section includes a switch to turn off all present and future AI features.

Mozilla states that AI models are not downloaded unless the user chooses to use them, and installed models can be viewed and managed in settings.

Availability

  • Project Nova is scheduled to roll out later this year.
  • Firefox 151 is available now.
