Meta Launches Standalone iOS App 'Forum' for Facebook Groups

View source

Meta has released a new iPhone application called "Forum, a Facebook app," available for download on the Apple App Store.

The app functions as a dedicated interface for Facebook Groups, allowing users to access group conversations separately from the main Facebook application. No Android version has been announced.

App Features and Functionality

Forum requires users to sign in with their existing Facebook account. Upon login, user profiles, group memberships, and activity are automatically transferred from the main Facebook app.

Key features include:

  • A feed displaying updates from the user's joined Facebook Groups
  • The ability to search for and join new groups within the app
  • An option to post and comment using a nickname, though group administrators retain the ability to view users' real identities
  • Cross-platform content synchronization: posts made in Forum appear in the corresponding Facebook Groups on the main app, and vice versa

AI-Powered Tools

Forum includes two artificial intelligence features:

  • "Ask" tab: An AI-powered tool that aggregates and compiles responses from discussions across multiple Facebook Groups. Users can ask questions and receive curated answers based on comments from groups, with the option to join those groups for further interaction.
  • Admin AI Assistant: A tool designed to assist group administrators with managing their communities, moderating content, and maintaining group health.

Availability and Testing Status

Meta has stated that the product is in a testing phase, with a company representative noting: "We test lots of new products publicly to see what people find interesting and useful to their experiences across our apps." Certain features may not be available in all regions.

The app was publicly identified by analyst Matt Navarra of the Geekout Newsletter. The app's App Store description states it is "a dedicated space built for deeper discussions, real answers, and the communities you care about."

Historical Context

This is not Meta's first attempt at a standalone Groups application. The company previously launched a similar app in 2014, which was later discontinued in 2017. Forum is one of several new standalone applications released by Meta recently, including "Instants," a disappearing photo sharing application for Instagram users.

Company Strategy

Multiple media reports have cited Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stating that AI-driven efficiencies would enable the company to develop more applications than historically possible. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal in April, Zuckerberg told employees that this efficiency would allow for the creation of additional apps. The New York Times reported that Meta is internally developing another application, codenamed "Arena," described as similar to the prediction market platform Polymarket.

Related Product Launch: Creator Companion

In a separate but related development, Facebook announced a new standalone application designed for content creators. The creator companion app, currently being tested with select creators, includes an AI assistant that provides personalized recommendations based on content style, performance metrics, audience engagement, and user goals. Features include an AI-powered comment tool that surfaces important comments and drafts replies in the creator's tone, and a daily priorities feed that displays post performance, goal progress, and comments requiring responses. This launch comes amid competition for creator engagement from platforms including TikTok and YouTube.
