Google Confirms Chromecast Glitch & Ends Security Support for Five Models
In late May 2025, Google confirmed and resolved a temporary technical issue that disrupted casting for some first-generation Chromecast devices. Separately, the company has updated its official support documentation to indicate that several Chromecast models are no longer receiving critical security updates.
Casting Disruption for First-Generation Chromecast
Incident Timeline
During late May 2025, users reported that casting features were failing on first-generation Chromecast devices. Some applications, including YouTube and HBO Max, stopped recognizing the device, while Disney+ and Spotify reportedly continued to function. Rebooting the device did not resolve the issue for all users.
Google acknowledged the problem and stated that the root cause was identified and resolved. Users subsequently reported that the casting functionality had been restored.
Device Background
The first-generation Chromecast was released in 2013. Google issued its final software update for the device in 2023, at which time the company warned users that they "may notice a degradation in performance."
Second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices were not affected by this incident, having received a cast fix update earlier in 2025.
Security Update Status for Chromecast Models
Devices No Longer Receiving Security Updates
Google has updated its support page for Nest devices, listing the following Chromecast models as no longer receiving critical security updates:
- Chromecast (2nd Gen)
- Chromecast Audio
- Chromecast Ultra
- Chromecast (3rd Gen)
- Chromecast with Google TV (4K)
The original Chromecast (1st Gen) lost support in 2025. Support windows for the 2nd Gen ended in 2020, and the 3rd Gen ended in 2023.
Devices Still Supported
The only model currently listed as still receiving security updates is the 2022 Chromecast with Google TV (HD), which remains within Google's stated five-year minimum support window.
Documentation Notes
A Reddit user noted the change to the support page appeared within the past few days. An archived version of the page from March 13, 2025, shows all five listed models were still supported at that time.
Google's main Chromecast updates page, last updated in November 2025, has not yet been updated to reflect this change.
For Google TV-powered models, app updates and server-side updates may continue independently of the security update status.
