Chess Broadway Revival to Close June 21, Three Months Early

The Broadway revival of Chess will close on June 21, 2025, three months earlier than previously planned.

The final performance will star Lea Michele, with Joanna “JoJo” Levesque having been scheduled to begin performances on June 23 as Michele's replacement. Producers Tom Hulce, Robert Ahrens, and The Shubert Organization announced the early closing on [date not provided].

Financial & Attendance Data

Producers have not disclosed the production's capitalization; some media reports estimate $15 million. The producers will not recoup their investment.

  • Weekly box office peaked at $2,066,742 for the week ending November 30, 2025, and has since declined to approximately half that amount.
  • During the week of April 1, 2025 (when Michele was on vacation), box office was $585,803 with 66% of seats occupied.

The production received five Tony Award nominations:

Lea Michele and Aaron Tveit did not receive Tony nominations. The production was not nominated for Best Revival of a Musical.

In a joint statement, producers Tom Hulce, Robert Ahrens, and The Shubert Organization expressed pride in the cast and creative team for reimagining Chess for a new generation and thanked audiences. They described bringing Chess back to Broadway as an enormous privilege.
