Google Drive Introduces Redesigned Document Scanner on Android with On-Device Features

View source

Google Drive’s redesigned document scanner is now rolling out widely on Android, bringing a smarter, faster way to capture physical documents.

Following a beta phase that began last year, the update introduces several key enhancements designed to streamline scanning, reduce errors, and improve image quality—all while keeping data processing on your device.

Key Features

Smart Batch Scanning
The most significant change allows users to scan multiple pages by simply hovering the camera over the document. The process functions more like video recording than individual image capture. A preview appears immediately at the bottom of the interface.

Auto-Best Frame
The scanner automatically identifies and replaces blurry captures with the highest-quality frame available, ensuring every page is sharp without manual re-shots.

Duplicate Detection
The system intelligently skips pages that have already been captured, preventing redundant scans and saving storage space.

Performance & Privacy

All scanning and image processing happens on-device, not in the cloud. This approach ensures:

  • No internet connection required for scanning
  • Faster processing with no upload delays
  • Full data privacy – your documents never leave your phone

Note: The feature requires devices with at least 8 GB of RAM.

Availability & Controls

  • The upgrade is powered by Google Play services and also available in other apps, such as Files by Google.
  • The beaker icon, which previously identified the beta version, has been removed in the final rollout.
  • Users can disable automatic scanning at any time using a dedicated pause button.
  • For previously captured images, the system file picker remains accessible on the left side of the interface.
