Malta’s Labour Party Secures Fourth Consecutive Term

Prime Minister Robert Abela claimed victory, stating the party received a strong mandate.

According to preliminary vote counts, Malta's Labour Party (PL) has secured a fourth consecutive term in office. Prime Minister Robert Abela declared victory, asserting that the party received a strong mandate from the electorate.

The opposition Nationalist Party (PN) conceded the election, with general secretary Charles Bonello noting that the party was successful in reducing Labour's majority.

Turnout remains high, slightly exceeding 2022 levels. Voter turnout reached 87.4%, marginally higher than the figure recorded in the 2022 general election, where PL won 55% of the vote.

Election Called a Year Early Amid Geopolitical Concerns

Prime Minister Robert Abela, 48, called the snap election a year ahead of schedule. He cited the need for a fresh mandate to navigate the geopolitical crises currently affecting Malta's import-dependent economy.

While Malta's economy grew by 4% in the previous year, concerns persist regarding the potential impact of the Middle East conflict on tourism and inflation. Abela's campaign focused on the PL's economic record since 2013, emphasizing stability as a key platform.

Leadership and Legacy

Abela has served as Prime Minister since 2020, taking over after his predecessor resigned during a political crisis triggered by the 2017 murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

A 2025 Council of Europe report indicated Malta lags in fighting corruption, though this issue did not feature prominently in the campaign.

Despite this, the issue of corruption did not become a central theme during the election campaign.

Malta in Context

Malta is the European Union's smallest and most densely populated country, home to approximately 550,000 residents. Its economy relies heavily on tourism, online gaming, and financial services.
